In The Garden

Christian Paintings and Pictures

“Then Jesus came with them (Peter, James, and John) to a (garden) called

Gethsemane and said to His disciples, ‘sit here while I go over there and pray.'” (Matthew 26:36).
“And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying ‘Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me, yet not My will, but yours be done.’  Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He was praying very fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood.” (Luke 22:41-44).
His hour of betrayal was drawing near.  He felt utterly forsaken and all the forces of evil tried to discourage Him with their presence.  The angel, no doubt, served as a comforting reminder that heaven was with Him.  Three times He sought support from His disciples only to sadly find them sleeping each time.  As Joseph Hart wrote: “Backwards and forwards thrice He ran, as if He sought some help from man.”
Nevertheless, as Charles Spurgeon so aptly wrote:  “Jesus was a man of sorrows, but of all the human race, there never was a man who had a deeper, purer, or more abiding peace than our Lord, Jesus Christ.”
